  1. Information on Bangladesh Shipping Corporation

Bangladesh Shipping Corporation was established on 5th February 1972  under President’s order No.10. The objectives for setting up the Corporation and its responsibilities are as under:

1.1                   To provide safe and efficient Shipping services in International routes and carry out all forms of activities connected with or ancillary to Shipping including taking over of the undertakings, movable assets or  immovable assets or properties of any corporation engaged in such activities. Without prejudice to generality of the fore-going provisions, the corporation shall in particular, have power:

        (a)                 To acquire, charter, hold or dispose of ships or crafts;

(b)                 To promote any organization, in or  outside Bangladesh for the purpose of engaging in any activity falling within the functions of the corporation, or to associate with any such organization;

(c)                 To  undertake repairs, overhaul, construction, reconditioning or assembling of ships, vessels and other vehicles;

(d)                 To assemble, manufacture, recondition, overhaul and repair machines, parts, accessories and instruments pertaining to ships, vessels and other vehicles;

(e)                 To establish institutes or make other arrangements for the instruction and training of  persons engaged or likely to be engaged in any activities connected  with or ancillary to shipping;

(f)                  To acquire, hold or dispose of any property, whether movable or immovable;

(g)                 To do all other things connected with or ancillary to any of the matters referred to above in 1.1(a) to 1.1(f); and

(h)               To carry out any  other function as may be notified by the Government in the Official Gazette.

  1. Board of Directors:

As per Ordinance XXIII of 1989, the Board of Directors of the Corporation consists of seven Members, headed by Hon’ble Minister for Shipping, as its Chairman, Secretary Ministry of Shipping, Joint Secretary, Finance Division, Ministry of Finance, Managing Director and three other full-time Executive Directors of BSC as the Members of the Board.

  1. Capital:

The authorised capital of the Corporaton is Tk.250 million divided into 2.5 million shares of Tk.100 each. The issued and paid up capital is Tk.200 million. Government’s share holdings amounted to Tk.175 million i.e. 87.5% of the total shares and balance Tk.25 million equivalent to 12.50% is owned by the private sharehoders. To accommodate Government  approved equity and facilitate further issuance of new share Govt. has decided to raise authorized and paid up capital of Tk.4000 & Tk.3500 million respectively. The implementation of this Govt. decision is under process.

  1. Commercial Operation:

 BSC operates the following routes and services:

(a)      Bangladesh-UK continent/Africa service,

(b)     Bangladesh-Far East/Japan service,

(c)      Bangladesh/Pakistan/West Asia gulf service,

(d)     Bangladesh/Singapore feeder service,

(e)      Chartering and Tramping service,

(f)       Crude oil lighterage service at Chittagong

(g) Food grain lighterage service at Chittagong & Mongla.

  1. ACTIVITIES OF BSC MARINE & GRAIN CONVEYOR WORKSHOP:

BSC Marine workshop generally carry out all kinds of repair works of BSC vessels. It also does repair works of furniture and fixtures, air-conditions, vehicles, manufacture of spare parts and other development works of the corporation. Besides, this workshop also undertakes various repair works of other organizations, specially privately owned vessel’s CO2 weighing, ultrasonic thickness gauging and crankshaft grinding etc. and also manufactures important spare parts for Mills/Factories.

  1. Business Strategy:

BSC being a commercial organization takes her business strategy depending on the country’s sea borne trade, viability of the routes, freight/chartering market etc. For instance, the operation in Bangladesh-Far East-Japan service has been kept in abeyance for the time being. Now emphasis has been given on chartering/tramping of vessels, Bangladesh-Singapore feeder service and Bangladesh-Pakistan-West Asia gulf service.
