 The National Maritime Institute (NMI) is one of the best providers of seafarer’s courses catering for the International Maritime Industry of international standard. Its aim is to obtain a maritime centre of excellence and establish the National Maritime Institute as the home of leading maritime personnel through providing appropriate education, training facilities, delivery of quality of courses and training services. Now it is one of the most modern institutes in the region occupying a large area along with various faculties, training block, etc. Bangladesh. A development project has been undertaken to further upgrade the institute.

 

History of National Maritime Institute (NMI)

      Ø      National Maritime Institute, Ctg(Former STC) was initially established in 1952 in a rented

            house.

Ø      Training started in 1959 at Haji Camp premises, Pahartali, Chittagong.

Ø      The institute was relocated in Seamen Hostel premises after independence in 1971.

Ø      The institute was relocated at Haji Camp, Pahartali in 1973.

Ø      9476 trainees were given pre-sea training from 1959-76 to December 2004.

Ø      Seamen and Immigration Welfare Directorate was shifted from the Ministry of Labor & Man Power to Ministry of Shipping in 1989 to make the administration more efficient and workable.

Ø      NMI again & finally relocated at Seamen Hostel in 1989 to meet the international standard in accordance with STCW-78/95.

The permanent training building of the NMI with new infrastructure was built including modern training facilities during 1993-94 with financial and technical assistance from the Govt. of Bangladesh and Japan.

The name of STC was listed in the IMO compendium in 2000.

The Seamen Training Centre was renamed as “National Maritime Institute” with effect from 07-07-2004.

BASIC TRAINING

All Pre-sea trainees also complete the following mandatory Basic training(Reg. VI of STCW 95) courses during their training period in the institute.

Ø      Personal Survival Techniques(STCW Code A-VI/1-1)

Ø      Fire Prevention and Fire-Fighting (A-VI/1-2)

Ø      Elementary First Aid (A-VI/1-3)

Ø      Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (A-VI/1-4)

PRE_SEA MAIN STREAM COURSES

 Fresh intake undertake these courses, which are designed to prepare them for serving on board vessels in deck, engine and catering discipline as ratings. Pre-sea training on different disciplines is as follows

  Ø      Deck rating (Regulation 11/4, Para 2.2.2 of STCW 95)

Ø      Engine rating (Regulation 111/4, Para 2.2.2 of STCW 95)

Ø      Cook rating (Bangladesh merchant shipping rule 6(1) of 1991)

Ø      Steward rating (Bangladesh merchant shipping rule 6(1) of 1991)

Ø      Electrician rating (Bangladesh merchant shipping rule 5(5) of 1991)

Ø      Filter rating (Bangladesh merchant shipping rule 5(5) of 1991)

 

 POST-SEA MAIN STREAM COURSES

 The following short and mandatory courses are conducted for post-sea students. 

Ø      Certificate of proficiency in survival craft and rescue boat (CPSC).

Ø      Navigation watches rating training (Deck).

Ø      Efficient deck hand (EDH).

Ø      Watch keeping training for rating (Engine).

Ø      Tanker safety & familiarization.

Ø      Chemical tanker safety & familiarization.

Ø      Global maritime distress & safety system (GMDSS) once conducted with practical training on board ship fitted with GMDSS equipment.

Ø      Oil tanker familiarization training courses.

Ø      Familiarization course on STCW, ISM & ISPS code.

Ø      Any other course as per shipping company's demand.
