Background:

Mongla Port is the second sea port situated in south western part of Bangladesh, at the confluence of the River Passur and Mongla, about 131 Km. upstream from the Bay of Bengal. The port is well protected by the natural mangrove forest of Sunderbans which was declared as world heritage by United Nations. Basically the entire western part of Bangladesh is its hinterland and neighboring country like Nepal, Bhutan and border areas of India are also considered as natural hinterland of Mongla Port.

 2. Port Management :

 a. Management : Mongla Port Authority (MPA) is headed by a Chairman.

There are three members i.e. Member (E&D), Member (Operation) & Member(Finance).

Board : The Board of Port Authority consisting of the Chairman and three other members formulates the policy of operation, administration and development of the port.

Administrative Ministry : Ministry of Shipping, Government of the people’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Dock Workers Management Board : Dock Workers Management Board consists of 13 members. The Board comprises with the Chairman of MPA, Vice-Chairman of Dock Workers Management Board and other members of the board are representatives of the Ministry of shipping, Director (Traffic) MPA, Joint Director of Labour Khulna Division, representative of Ship owners, two representatives from Stevedore’s Association, representative of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, four representatives from dock workers. The board is responsible for smooth handling of cargo and ships in the port management of dock workers.

 c. Land of Mongla Port :  The total land under Mongla Port Authority is 2323.80 acres (960.57 Hectors) covering area of Permanent Port, Old Mongla, Khulna and Hironpoint.

 3. Navigational Information :

  • Maximum permissible draft: 7.0 m to 8.5 m. draft vessels.
  • LOA : Maximum LOA of vessel is 210.00 m.
  • Tidal Range : The tides are important for navigation as determines the possibility of crossing the shallow outer bar at the entrance. The tides are semi diurnal with prominent diurnal effect. The approx tidal range is between 1.2 m. to 3.5 m. all over the channel.
  • Pilotage : Pilotage is compulsory.
  • Radio Communication : Port Control, Harbour Control & Hiron Point. Pilot station maintain watch on VHF Channel 16 & 11 for 24 hours and New Port Control maintains VHF on channel 16 during 8.00 to 22.00 hours.
  • Anchorage : The anchorage is safe and holding ground is good. The river bed consists of soft mud and fine sand.
  • Night Navigation : Night navigation is continuous for outward and inward movement of ships upto 145 m. LOA and 6.5 m. draft.

4. Fire Fighting Arrangement :

Port Authority is well equipped with fire fighting facilities to combat out break of tire in the river and shore area of the port. All transits sheds, warehouses and yards are well equipped provided with fire alarm system, different types of fire extinguishers and fire buckets. Moreover, entire jetty area is covered by fire hydrant system.
